Of all historical dichotomies dividing philosophy into different protectionist traditions, the opposition between Anglo-Saxon and Continental philosophy has featured prominently in the twentieth century. This paper attempts to show how some problems encountered by traditional Anglo-Saxon epistemology – based on the standard definition of knowledge as « Justified True Belief » - can be avoided if Fact, Truth and Knowledge are recast in the light of W. Heisenberg’s redefinition of Reality in his 1942 Manuscript. While consisting of three parts – exposition of the standard thesis, a refutation and an alternative – this attempt has two objectives : (i) to initiate a dialogue between the Anglo-Saxon and Continental traditions; and (ii) to present a work by Heisenberg which is relatively unrecognized in the Anglo-Saxon world, as it has not yet been translated into English.
